Sammy Iason (Heerlen, 1995) lives and works in Amsterdam, where he is inspired as a photographer by the mundanity of things. He focuses his lens on the street, familiar people, as well as strangers and situations that are perhaps often overlooked precisely because of their banality. In this way he tries to capture the appearances of moments as he experiences them. Iason is challenged and inspired by the work of great 20th century photographers, like Brassaï, Vivian Maier and Anders Petersen.

Sammy works analogue and shoots his images, alternating between quick snapshots, freezing and portrait photography, through the lens of various cameras such as the Leica M6, Hasselblad and Rollieflex. His black-and-white photos often appear in series that he compiles into zines such as Arctic Charm (2020), which focused on his series on the Icelandic people and landscape. His latest zine, called SLEEPERS (2021), contains photos of people sleeping in various places and positions.

Sammy studied guitar at the pop department of the Amsterdam Conservatory and apart from music and photography, he has roots in breakdancing and skateboarding. Besides photography for various artists such as Baby’s Berserk, Joya Mooi, Teddy's Hit, TT Elzinga and Pip Blom, for which he shot portraits and album covers, his work was also featured in the exhibition Golden Glue ('PAND, Heerlen, 2020). In the summer of 2022 he exhibited twice in Amsterdam; a solo exhibition at Café Bern and as a part of a group show at O.D. Gallery.
